ABOUT FALLOW DEER

Fallow deer originated in parts of Europe, Asia Minor, Spain and north-west Africa and have been established in the wild in Australia since their introduction and release sometime around 1830.

Mature fallow deer bucks stand around 90cm at the shoulder and weigh approximately 90kg.

Does are much smaller and lighter, standing about 76cm and weighing only about 40kg.

Colour varies considerably in fallow deer and ranges from the common or 'red' fallow deer, through the black or melanistic fallow, to animals which are creamy white.

ANTLER QUALITY

Fallow hunting is conducted in lightly timbered hill country, heavily timbered gully heads and river flats and can be as physically demanding as sambar hunting.

Like Shikars for sambar, fallow are hunted from similarly equipped cabins on privately owned grazing properties located in remote parts of the high country.

Antler quality in Australia's wild fallow can be very high and antlers which have scored in excess of 260 Douglas points have been taken.

Watervalley Game Ranch also offers excellent fallow hunting with thousands being seen during a few days and some outstanding trophies are taken.

The rut occurs from late March through April/May.

SUCCESS RATE

Fallow deer are easier to hunt than either sambar or hog and so far I have had a 100% success rate for free-ranging bucks.

BEST TIME

Late February through May inclusive.

HUNTING METHODS

Usually the buck is spied from a vantage point and then stalked.

FIREARMS AND BOWS - MINIMUM LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

A centrefire rifle, muzzle-loading rifle or bow may be used.

  • Centrefire rifle - minimum legal calibre is .270 (6.85mm); minimum legal cartridge length 2" (51mm); minimum legal projectile weight 130 grains (8.45 grams).
  • Muzzle-loading rifle - minimum legal calibre .45" (11.45 mm); projectile must be the type known as a "Minie"; minimum legal projectile weight 230 grains (14.91 grams).
The minimum specifications for rifles, muzzle-loaders and bows for hunting sambar will suffice for hunting hog, rusa, and fallow, although lighter, more rapidly expanding projectiles will perform better on fallow and hog deer because they are considerably smaller.
