Trophy Rusa Stag

ABOUT RUSA DEER

Rusa is the Malay word for deer and they are medium sized, rough-coated deer which are biologically allied to the sambar.   There are two subspecies established in the wild in Australia and the Javan rusa (Cervus timorensis russa) is the larger.   Stags stand up to 110cm at the shoulder and may weigh around 136kg.

ANTLER QUALITY

A Rusa's antlers are quite large in comparison with its body size, and very distinctive with a typical lyre shape.   A mature stag may grow antlers up to 40 inches in length but anything over 30 inches is considered a good trophy.

Although free ranging Rusa exist in Australia hunting opportunites are very restricted.

Watervalley Game Ranch however has a large number of virtual free-ranging Rusa and provides the best opportunity in Australia for a Rusa stag.

BEST TIME

The best months are May to August inclusive.

SUCCESS RATE

Rusa are not anywhere as elusive as Sambar and a hunter is certain to bag a trophy stag.

HUNTING METHODS

Rusa are spotted from the hunting vehicle and then stalked on foot.

FIREARMS AND BOWS - MINIMUM LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

A centrefire rifle, muzzle-loading rifle or bow may be used.

  • Centrefire rifle - minimum legal calibre is .270 (6.85mm); minimum legal cartridge length 2" (51mm); minimum legal projectile weight 130 grains (8.45 grams).
  • Muzzle-loading rifle - minimum legal calibre .45" (11.45 mm); projectile must be the type known as a "Minie"; minimum legal projectile weight 230 grains (14.91 grams).

The minimum specifications for rifles, muzzle-loaders and bows for hunting sambar will suffice for hunting hog, rusa, and fallow, although lighter, more rapidly expanding projectiles will perform better on fallow and hog deer because they are considerably smaller.
