Mark's Story
During the 11 years I have hunted sambar I have put up countless only to hear them crash away never to be seen again. My wife bought me Errol’s first book ‘Secrets of the Sambar’ Vol. 1 for Christmas a couple of years ago. After reading this book several times my whole approach to hunting sambar changed completely. After reading Errol’s book I booked a spot on his ‘Beyond the Basics Training Course’ as I believed I would learn a lot more if it was explained to me first hand in the bush.
Errol, Lynne and Daisy made us feel very, very welcome, the food was outstanding (I think I went home at least a couple of kilo’s heavier) and their hospitality and friendly nature was exceptional. What I learnt that weekend reassured me that what I thought I knew was actually correct. But Errol also pointed out the much finer aspects that often are the difference between success and failure. I learnt a hell of a lot about optics, binoculars, scopes and range finders. It was very helpful to be able to compare different quality optics in different light levels throughout the day, but especially from dusk until dark. In fact the week after completing the course I invested in a pair of Swarovski bino’s and a Z6i scope which I fitted to my trusty old 270 Ruger.
I am convinced that because of what Errol showed and explained to me, I now know where to look and where to start a hunt. For the first time I understand things such as which face the deer are most likely to be on in the prevailing weather conditions. I now realize that this is one of the ‘must knows’ of sambar hunting. In fact fully understanding this enabled me to take a magnificent stag - my very first – soon after completing Errol’s course.
I now find that when I use tips gained from the course I am now able to watch hinds, fawns, spikies and stags that used to crash away unseen. Being able to do gives me a huge buzz. Recently I hunted the ‘High Country’ with some mates and was much more confident with my own ability. I put into practice a lot of the hints and tips which Errol gave me and it all paid off when I took a magnificent 25 inch stag doing precisely what he recommended. Without Errol’s vast knowledge and experience behind me I would still be wandering around the bush hearing a lot of crashing noises in the distance.
Many, many thanks to Errol, Lynne and Daisy.
