We arrived in a NSW State Forest on Thursday night, set up camp and had a good sleep.

We woke early and checked the temperature. After I applied the relevant overlays which I learnt on your course and from your Hunt Smart System book, I knew precisely where the deer would be at this time of the day and in these conditions.

I dropped my father off at a vantage point where he could watch that spot and I headed to another spot not too far away.

At around 8am he spotted a good stag walking behind the trees and eventually he popped out into the open and started grazing.

He ranged him at 260 metres, dialed in the 338-Win Mag and dropped him.

I crossed over to where he shot the deer and what a surprise it was. A fully mature stag as even as they get, with big brows and tops. He measured 26x26x27 inches even with an inch or so missing from the top of each beam.

The feeling of accomplishment was unreal and the joy of being with my father when he took his first Sambar Stag was overwhelming.

Taking such a great animal in a busy NSW State Forest is an accomplishment.

The knowledge we learnt from your course about assessing an area and narrowing down where the deer were likely to be in different conditions and time of day worked perfectly.

We have shot 6 more Sambar in the same area since and it’s still producing.
