Scott & Saxton Mitchell - HUNT SMART COURSE Success Story #82

After receiving the Secrets of Sambar Trilogy and the Hunt Smart System books as a gift, I spent a lot of time reading through them. While the information was excellent, I realised I learn much better by seeing things done in person and getting hands-on experience. After meeting Errol at the 2025 Wild Deer Expo, I knew I had to do one of his courses.

On 28 May 2026, my son Saxton and I attended Errol’s Hunt Smart Course. From the moment everyone arrived, we got straight into it. Errol showed us the differences between deer tracks and explained how to effectively track deer. One of the things that really stood out to me was learning about the wagon wheel. Errol explained the rim, spokes and hub, and once he broke it all down, it all started to click. It made understanding deer movement and how they use an area much easier to understand.

What really impressed me was that we saw deer every day of the course, and they were exactly where Errol said they would be based on the weather and the overlays. Seeing his knowledge put into practice was pretty amazing and gave me a lot of confidence in what he teaches.

The whole course was a great experience. The other eight blokes on the course were great company around the campfire, and Errol’s stories kept everyone entertained while sharing plenty of valuable knowledge and experience.

After the course, Saxton and I had one extra day to hunt, so we headed to an area Errol suggested. After a bit of scouting, we found a great spot with heaps of sign. We found a wagon wheel, rub trees and deer beds, and for the first time we felt like we really knew what we were looking at. We didn’t manage to get a deer, but I’m sure with a few more days in the area we would have come across some.

Doing Errol’s Hunt Smart Course has definitely got us hooked. The knowledge and confidence we’ve gained have completely changed the way we approach hunting, and we can’t wait to get back into the Victorian High Country and have another crack at the mighty Sambar.

I’d highly recommend this course to anyone interested in Sambar hunting, whether you’re just starting out or looking to improve your skills. You’ll learn a lot, meet some great people, and come away with knowledge that actually works in the bush.
